Sandakphu Trek, West Bengal is a wonderland for trekkers. Anyone in love with mountains cannot afford to miss the expedition to the peak. Sandakphu is the highest point in Singalila range, and in the state of West Bengal, India. The trek to Sandakphu offers grand views of the world’s tallest peaks including Mt. Everest, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, etc. It also offers the sight of mountain peaks of Nepal, Sikkim, Tibet and Bhutan. The months of October and November are ideal as they are perfect for crystal clear mountain views. The winter is ideal to experience fresh snow.
Sandakphu is a good trek for beginners with good health. Any physically active person over the age of 12 can participate. The trail to Sandakphu constantly oscillates between India and Nepal. Although the trek is rated as moderately difficult, one needs endurance and stamina to cover long distances every day. The gradient is gradual mostly even without glacial moraines.
Start the trek from Jaubhari, moving to Tumling, an 11 km distance which can be covered in 6-7 hours. The next stop in the trail is Kalipokhri, a trek of 11 km, to be covered in 7 hours. Move on to Sandakphu Peak which is 6 km away covered in 3 hours. The region abounds in rhododendrons, ferns of numerous varieties, orchids and other mountain flowers. The route of the trail passes through region blessed with about six hundred different species of birds. The green forests on the slopes of the mountains and the snowcapped views in the horizon are fascinating.
