Tashiding Gompa is among significant religious places in Sikkim and the entire Northeast Indian region. This monastery is perched atop a heart-shaped hill overlooking Rathong River and the Rangit River, dominated by the snow-clad Mount Kanchenjunga. Its history goes back to 1717, when Ngadak Sempa Chembo (one of the three Lamas who performed the consecration ceremony of the first Chogyal) laid the foundation of the Tashiding Monastery. Since then, the divine aura of Tashiding Monastery has lured people here from all over the world.
Belonging to the Nyingmapa order, 41 chortens (shrines) in the Tashiding Monastery have their divine roots. In the monastery, the 'manis' (stone plates) are engraved with holy Buddhist mantras and inscriptions of "Om Mane Padme Hum". The main sanctum sanctorum stands surrounded by old edifices, stupas, and stone plates.
A holy chorten (stupa) known as 'Tong-Hwa-rang-Do' translates into the local language meaning 'Saviors by mere sight'. It is believed that a mere glimpse of the monastery’s stupa washes away one's sins.
As per the Buddhist scriptures, Guru Padmasambhava (usually known as Guru Rimpoche) blessed the lands in the 8th century, and his divine powers are till date, felt by the devotees. The colorful flags fluttering in the air create a divine effect in the monastery complex. Visitors are left in awe of the bliss of the monastery.
March/April and September/October are considered the best times to visit Tashiding Monastery. However, if you want cultural insight, attend its celebration of Bhumchu in February/March. This unique festival is celebrated every year and draws visitors and Buddhist devotees in huge numbers. Guru Padmasambhava himself started the festival. The holy lamas open a sacred pot holding holy water and make predictions by studying the level and amount of water within.
