History

In the year 1835, the first building that came up on this site was a garden house that was built for the queen’s favorite handmaiden Kesar Badaran. Later on, during the rule of Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh, in the year 1887, this house was converted in a small royal hunting lodge, right amidst a thick jungle. During the initial years of the 20th century, additions and expansions were done in the structure of palace and the design was made by Samuel Swinton Jacob.  Rambagh palace then became the residence of Maharajah Sawai Man Singh II. In 1910 a private school was also opened in the premises for the children of the aristocratic people. Then in 1931, a number of large suites were added to the property. Post India’s independence and merging of the princely states, the Palace became Government’s House. In the starting of the decades of 1950’s, maintenance of the Palace became slightly difficult for the royal family. And finally in 1957, the decision of converting Rambagh Palace into a luxury hotel was taken. In 1972, Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces took the responsibility of carrying forward the royal tradition of the luxury of Rambagh Palace.
