Pushkar in the northwestern part of Rajasthan is a not just a sleepy city that breathes in spirituality and sacred religious norms, but it holds the vibrant spirit of the state as well. Justifying this in its best form is the auspicious occasion of Pushkar camel fair that takes place during Kartik Poornima between the months of October and November. Tourists during this time of the year flock in thousands; some for religion and many for the eccentric Pushkar camel fair.
Amongst the very prominent events in Rajasthan, the Pushkar camel fair is much like a cattle fair, where mass trading of animals; from the pride of the desert state (camel) to goats and sheeps, takes place at one spot. The animals, primarily highlighted of camels, are decorated in a traditional style (with garlands of beads and cushioned artificial flowers).
Just when the trading of animals get settled, the well-bred and decorated animals get all lined up for the parade. Adorned in colorful patterns of bright colors along with the bells and bangles, animals march on the sand dunes. The most beautiful among them gets rewarded with a prize.
Then there is a camel race which draws a large amount of attention from the tourists. Besides these events, Pushkar Camel fair also features various stalls from where one can buy traditional Rajasthani handicrafts, printed textiles, jewelry and many more.
