One of the most popular museums in Pondicherry, the Puducherry museum is a storehouse of a wonderful collection of artifacts and remainders, which belong to Chola and Pallava dynasties. While the lobby contains several stone-craved statues, in the courtyard of the museum, there are fossilized trunks of ancient trees. On the ground floor, there are models of modes of transportation that were used in this region in the old times. Bronze statues of Gods and Goddesses are also a part of the collection.
There is a wonderful collection of church relics, handicrafts and coins here. The museum also houses a separate section for shells and fossils. There is also an excellent gallery containing sculptures as well as the remains of archaeological findings from the Arikamedu Roman settlement. Another section has the history and legendary French colonial information. Also find a wonderful collection of temple lamps, and other pieces of art and craft.
The painting section of the Puducherry Museum has colonial prints, glass and Tanjore paintings as well as contemporary works in colors, pastels, and oils.
