The small hill town of Idukki derives its name from the Malayalam word Idukku that literally means 'a narrow gorge'. Idukki lives true to its name and the Periyar River has the hills of Kuravan and Kurathi on its sides forming a gorge. The mist clad hillocks of the hill resort of Idukki work magic. Idukki Arched Dam boasts of being the first arched dam in India as well as Asia has been built across Periyar River.

While at the Idukki hill station  of Idukki you may visit the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary. The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over an area of 70 sq. km close to the Arched Dam. The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary attracts tourists for its forest cover that is rich is both flora and fauna. You may spot animals like the elephant, bison, sambhar, deer besides a wide variety of snakes and birds like the jungle foul, laughing thrush et al.

Cheruthani and Moolamattam are both in close proximity to Idukki and worth visiting. From the heights of Cheruthani you may see sights as far as in Kochi. At Moolamattam the powerhouse of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project is a major tourist attraction.

The adventure seekers may indulge in trekking and mountain walks at Idukki.

Best Time To Visit

The hill resort of Idukki experiences moderate weather throughout the year. The seasonal changes cause much temperature variation thereby making Idukki the perfect place to be visited anytime of the year.

Tourists Attractions

For the nature and the animal lovers an excursion to Thekkady from Idukki is an excellent option. Thekkady has the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary where the plantations, jungles, mountains and an artificial lake come together with the fauna and avian to make the trip to the Tiger Reserve unforgettable. While at Thekkady you may also indulge in trekking, elephant rides and boating.

Then there is the hill resort of Peermade. The summer retreat of the erstwhile rules of Tranvancore Peermade is worth visiting for its gorgeous green grasslands, wonderful waterfalls and plantations of tea, coffee, rubber et al.

Then there is the hill resort of Munnar where you may savor the nature at its best. The tea estates, forests and the wildlife are the major tourist attractions at Munnar.

How To Reach

By Air - En route to Munnar, Idukki lies 121 km from Kottayam in the southern part of Kerala. Getting there Kottayam is 154 km from Thiruvananthapuram and 64 km from Kochi, which are the nearest airports.

By Rail & Road - Idukki is well connected by rail and road to several tourist places across Kerala.
