One of the most colorful and popular festivals of Hampi, the Virupaksha Car Festival is a religious celebration, organized with great zeal and enthusiasm. The festival is organized in the month of March / April as per the local calendar.

The highlight of this festival is a huge wooden chariot or the temple car from Virupaksha Temple, which is pulled in a colorful procession, along the main road of Hampi bazaar. The statues/images of the presiding god and goddess are kept in the chariot and are the main center of attraction. Virupaksha Car Festival symbolizes the annual wedding ritual of the god and the goddess. The procession is attended by a huge number of devotees.
