Laxmi Vilas Palace was built back in the year 1887 by the ruler of Bharatpur Maharaja Ram Singh for his younger brother, Raja Raghunath Singh. In the year 1994, it was decided to convert the palace into a heritage hotel. Since then, Laxmi Vilas Palace has opened its doors to guests from all across the globe. Today, Laxmi Vilas Palace is one of the finest heritage hotels in Rajasthan. The traditional hospitality, grandeur, beauty and royalty of the palace are so charming that it promises to leave every guest amazed.
History and Legend
Spread over an area of 50 acres, Laxmi Vilas Palace was built in the year 1857 by the then ruler of Bharatpur, Maharaja Ram Singh. The palace features a unique combination of Rajput and Mughal architecture. Earlier, the palace was named as Raghunath Niwas. The palace is known as Kakaji ki Kothi by the locals.
Laxmi Vilas Palace is an important structure of Bharatpur and it has been a major witness of popular events of Bharatpur like affairs of the court, royal duck shoots and royal weddings. The palace also acted as a host to dignitaries like the Duke of Edinburgh, King of Nepal, Shah of Iran, and Shah of Afghan. Even today, the palace keeps the traditional hospitality alive.
While a part of the palace is a heritage hotel, other part is the royal residence of Raja Raghunath Singhji. During restoration of the palace, proper care was taken to ensure that the royal character of the palace remains preserved. The furnishings, paintings and photographs of the palace speak a lot about the old days of Bharatpur.
