Wildlife Sanctuaries in Goa

Introduction

The breath-takingly beautiful beaches draw much of Goa's share of limelight. But the hot and humid tropical climate of Goa coupled with the presence of more than forty estuarine, eight marine and about ninety riverine islands is conducive to a lush vegetation which in turn supports a varied wildlife. Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary

This bird watchers' paradise, the only bird sanctuary in Goa has been aptly named after India's best known ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali. A bus or car ride from Panaji , takes you to the Ribandar ferry wharf. From here you take a ferry across the Mandovi river to the island of Chorao. The sanctuary is within walking distance from the ferry wharf at Chorao.

Bhagvan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary

The Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary at Mollem covers an area of 240 square kilometers and is 53 km from Panaji. This is also the largest wildlife sanctuary in Goa. Monkeys, Malayan giant squirrels, cobras and pythons are the inhabitants of this sanctuary among many others.

Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary

The foothills of the Western Ghats is the abode of the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary. Elephants, sambar, bison, wild boar are common. Covering an area of 80 sq. km, this sanctuary happens to be the smallest wildlife sanctuary in Goa.

Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary

At a distance of 60km from Panaji Cotigao is Goa's second largest wildlife reserve. The 105sq. km. of forestland is home to a considerable variety of flora and fauna. Though spotting wildlife can be an unpredictable affair, the expansive spread of the forest guarantees a pleasant experience.
