The history of the earliest known temples in Goa dates back to over a thousand years. The pyramidal shaped tower or the traditional Shikara arises from the main shrine. Generally, there are two or more smaller shrines housing other deities known as Parivar Devatas around the entrance to the Garbagriha. Shri Shantadurga Temple

Dedicated to Shantadurga, the Goddess who mediates between Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, this temple at the foothill of Kavlem is the largest temple in Goa . It was built in 1728 AD during the reign of Shahu Maharaj of Satara at the request of one of his ministers, Naro Ram Mantri . Located 33 km from Panaji, Shri Shantadurga temple has a striking Garbhakuda or the holy of holies where the deity of Shantadurga is kept. The temple boasts of a huge tank , light tower Dipa Stambha and Agrashalas for the lodging of the devotees.
