Temples in Goa
The history of the earliest known temples in Goa dates back to over a thousand years. The fundamental design of the temples of Goa are in essence like most Hindu temples in India, organized around the central shrine or the Garbagriha or the sanctum sanctorum that is home to the main deity. The pyramidal shaped tower or the traditional Shikara arises from the main shrine. Generally, there are two or more smaller shrines housing other deities known as Parivar Devatas around the entrance to the Garbagriha. The major temples in Goa are Shri Nagesh at Bandora, Shri Bhagavati Temple, Shri Mangueshi Temple, Shri Shantadurga Temple, Shri Mahalaxmi at Bandora, Shri Mahalsa at Mardol, and Shri Chandranath at Quepem.
Shri Nagesh at Bandora
Situated in Bandora , about 4 km to the east of Ponda, Shri Nagesh temple is dedicated to Lord Naguesh , an incarnation of Lord Shiva . Built in 1413 , the temple is one of the oldest in Goa and of considerable archaeological importance . The major attractions of the temple are the five-storied lamp tower Deepstambh and the historic old water tank Kunda, in which you can see the reflection of the idol of Lord Naguesh.
The temple Sabhamandap has a gallery on both sides containing colorful delicate wood carvings of the scenes of Ramayana on one side and wooden images of Astadikpal and Gandharva on the other. The entrance to the main shrine looks elegant with the beautiful stone sculpture of the Nandi Bull , the vehicle of Lord Shiva. On either side of the sanctum are ancillary shrines of Lakshmi-Narayan and Lord Ganesh .
Festivals at this temple are another top draw among the tourists. The Naguesh jatra is celebrated here on a full moon day, while it is in November when the Anguish Satrap festival is celebrated.
