Temples in Goa
The history of the earliest known temples in Goa dates back to over a thousand years. The fundamental design of the temples of Goa are in essence like most Hindu temples in India, organized around the central shrine or the Garbagriha or the sanctum sanctorum that is home to the main deity. The pyramidal shaped tower or the traditional Shikara arises from the main shrine. Generally, there are two or more smaller shrines housing other deities known as Parivar Devatas around the entrance to the Garbagriha. The major temples in Goa are Shri Mangueshi Temple, Shri Bhagavati Temple, Shri Shantadurga, Shri Mahalaxmi at Bandora, Shri Nagesh at Bandora, Shri Mahalsa at Mardol, and Shri Chandranath at Quepem.
Shri Mangueshi Temple
This temple, dedicated to Lord Mangueshi , an incarnation of Lord Shiva , is located on a hillock at Priol-Ponda Taluka, 22 km from Panaji along National Highway 4A. It is located on a hillock surrounded by a picturesque landscape.
The deity, originally from Cortalim, was moved to Priol to avoid the Portuguese destruction in the early days of its rule. Undergoing many renovations today its style is exclusively Goan. Though small it has an air of characteristic sophistication. The oldest part of the temple complex is the water tank in front of the temple.
This 18 th century temple attracts hordes of pilgrims every year and is gifted by the Welcome Gate , a lofty white lamp tower at the entrance, a Noubatkhana overlooking the temple tank and the 12 Agrashalas or residences on three sides.
