Temples in Goa

The history of the earliest known temples in Goa dates back to over a thousand years. The fundamental design of the temples of Goa are in essence like most Hindu temples in India, organized around the central shrine or the Garbagriha or the sanctum sanctorum that is home to the main deity. The pyramidal shaped tower or the traditional Shikara arises from the main shrine. Generally, there are two or more smaller shrines housing other deities known as Parivar Devatas around the entrance to the Garbagriha. The major temples in Goa are Shri Chandranath at Quepem, Shri Bhagavati Temple, Shri Nagesh at Bandora, Shri Mangueshi Temple, Shri Shantadurga Temple, Shri Mahalaxmi at Bandora, and Shri Mahalsa at Mardol.

Shri Chandranath at Quepem

Shri Chandranath temple, being situated on the top of a 350-meter high Chandranath Hill at Paroda , in Quepem taluka, provides a panoramic view of its delightful surroundings. This temple, located 45 km from Panaji, the capital of Goa, is so designed that the Shivalinga receives moonlight on every full moon. This rock-carved Shivalinga is renowned for its oozing whenever rays of full moon fall on it. The ancient chariot at the temple is also famous, due to its exquisite wood carvings.

The presiding deity of this 17th century temple is Lord Chandranath or Lord of the Moon , an incarnation of Lord Shiva who is also the Titular deity of the Bhoja Kings . They ruled South Goa till the middle of 8th century and named their capital Chandrapur after the deity.
