Temples in Goa

The history of the earliest known temples in Goa dates back to over a thousand years. The fundamental design of the temples of Goa are in essence like most Hindu temples in India, organized around the central shrine or the Garbagriha or the sanctum sanctorum that is home to the main deity. The pyramidal shaped tower or the traditional Shikara arises from the main shrine. Generally, there are two or more smaller shrines housing other deities known as Parivar Devatas around the entrance to the Garbagriha. The major temples in Goa are Shri Bhagavati Temple, Shri Nagesh at Bandora, Shri Mangueshi Temple, Shri Shantadurga Temple, Shri Mahalaxmi at Bandora, Shri Mahalsa at Mardol, and Shri Chandranath at Quepem.

Shri Bhagavati Temple

This 500-year old temple in Pernem (26 km from Goa) celebrates the Goddess Bhagavati Ashtabhuja , or eight-handed Goddess, one of the forms of Goddess Durga . The temple, situated by the side of the main road, has Goddess Bhagvati in a standing position on a high pedestal which looks quite impressive. Either side of the entrance to the temple is beautified with two life-size images of elephants in standing position carved from black stone.

A major attraction of the temple is the Dussehra festival that is celebrated with revelry for a fortnight from Ashwin Shuddha Pratipada to Poomima , when over 25000 devotees throng the temple.
