Temples in Goa

The history of the earliest known temples in Goa dates back to over a thousand years. The fundamental design of the temples of Goa are in essence like most Hindu temples in India, organized around the central shrine or the Garbagriha or the sanctum sanctorum that is home to the main deity. The pyramidal shaped tower or the traditional Shikara arises from the main shrine. Generally, there are two or more smaller shrines housing other deities known as Parivar Devatas around the entrance to the Garbagriha. The major temples in Goa are –

Shri Bhagavati Temple

This 500-year old temple in Pernem celebrates the Goddess Bhagavati Ashtabhuja , or eight-handed Goddess, one of the forms of Durga.

Shri Mangueshi Temple

This temple, dedicated to Lord Mangueshi , an incarnation of Lord Shiva , is located on a hillock at Priol-Ponda Taluka and surrounded by a picturesque landscape.

Shri Shantadurga

Dedicated to Shantadurga, this temple at Kavlem has a striking Garbhakuda or the holy of holies where the deity is kept.

Shri Mahalaxmi at Bandora

Situated in Bandora, this temple is considered the abode of the original Goddess of the Shakti cult , Goddess Mahalakshmi .

Shri Nagesh at Bandora

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple is situated in Bandora. The temple Sabhamandap has a gallery containing delicate wood carvings of the scenes of Ramayana on one side and of Astadikpal and Gandharva on the other.

Shri Mahalsa at Mardol

Located a km from Shri Mangueshi temple, the deity worshipped at this temple at Mardol is an attribute of Lord Vishnu .

Shri Chandranath at Quepem

This temple, being situated on the top of a 350-meter high hill of Chandranath , Paroda , at Quepem, provides a panoramic view of its delightful surroundings.
