Shopping In Goa

Even with all the attractions and events in Goa – the land of magnificent beaches, for tourists, nothing beats a day of shopping at the traditional, modern and beachside shopping outlets to gather some memorable souvenirs exclusive to the land. So every tourist should plan his trip keeping in mind that shopping should be a priority on the itinerary along with the sightseeing attractions.
To start with, the tourists can either go for the up-market boutiques for unusual and good quality curios, handicrafts, antiques and silks or embroidery items or else they can visit the beach front bazaars and flea markets which offer delightful shopping at throw-away prices.

Mapusa Market

One of the most famous traditional markets in Goa is the Friday Market at Mapusa which sells everything from dried fish and spices to curios and old coins. It is an authentic market full of activity and life which offers an exceptional insight into the lives of locals and hence shouldn't be missed by anyone visiting Goa!

Mapusa, the administrative headquarters and the capital of Bardez taluka is a town 15 km from Goa's capital, Panaji. The town's name evolved from the Konkani words " maap " which means 'volumes of measure' and " Sa" which means 'fill up'. This can be taken to indicate a place where goods are measured and bought. The factors that have caused the Mapusa market to grow to its current size and scope are that Mapusa is located at the hub of commercial activity and that it is situated very close to a place of religious pilgrimage.

The Mapusa bazaar (Market) is one of the few authentic bazaars to be found in the state. It is a colorful and vibrant market that usually begins at 8 in the morning on Fridays and goes on till dusk sets in.

Women from the neighboring villages come here to sell their wares often fighting for a space in the shade of a building, under an overhang, or if all else fail, squatting under a tattered, hand-held umbrella. In the Mapusa Market there is an abundant supply of fresh fish, all kinds of locally produced vegetables, and a varied range of exotic fruits from jack fruit and mangoes to plantain bananas. Pickles and preserves, spices, earthen pots, coir mats, and the famous Goan ' chouricos ' (sausages) are also available readily. While strolling through the market, be prepared to be greeted by the pungent aroma of spices and the dried fish and sausages being sold.

The market even caters to people shopping for special occasions as there is a wide range of saree and sweet shops, as well as tailors and goldsmiths. In fact, all that Goans need in their everyday lives can be found in Mapusa on Fridays. One can practically find everything here ranging from fruit and vegetables to toddy kitchen ware and clothes. In fact, people from all over Goa come to this market town on Fridays to purchase the week's supply of essentials that they need for their everyday lives.
