Introduction

One of the most important centers of Portuguese domination during the early 16th century, Vasco da Gama or Vasco as it is more popularly known is one of the most important ports of western India. The history of the city centers around a fort, built by the Portuguese at Sada with the intention of possessing a greater control on the ships plying on the Zuari River. 1685 saw thousands of Portuguese women and children being moved into the fort for protection against the Maratha attacks against the Portuguese. Today, the city is an even busier port than at the time of its formation, bustling about in the happy business than forms the center of the daily lives of most Goans.

Tourist Attractions of Vasco Da Gama:

The tourist attractions of Vasco da Gama mainly center on the Port at Sada which is a slightly hilly region refreshed by the presence of a beach. Supplying water to the region and also adding to its natural beauty is a small fresh water spring on he hills.

The port of Marmugao is also an important attraction of the area being one of the few natural harbors of India, along with a couple of beaches called Bogmalo beach and the Hollant beach and located around 8 kms south east of the town.

How to Reach:

By Air: Vasco is extremely well-connected to Dabolim, Goa’s only airport which is at a distance of only 4 kms southwest of the town.

By Rail: Located in the heart of the town, the railway station of Vasco is well connected to a number of neighboring states and almost all the major cities of the region.

By Road: The Interstate Kadamba Bus Terminus, 3 km east of the town centre sees a number of buses arriving from the nearby cities like Panjim and Margao.
