Mapusa

One of main features of Goa's unique attraction is the way she has preserved her natural purity. Dotted with small, picturesque towns, Goa leads her tourists to a trip into medievalism. Exhibiting the charming natural beauty and un-spoilt purity of Goa is the small town of Mapusa, home to some of the most picturesque bazaars of Goa.

This tiny market town is located near the Mount Alto, 13 kms away from the capital city of Panjim. Mapusa was first referred to in 1580 by a Dutch Chronicler, who described it as the "Bazaar Grande". Essentially a market town, Mapusa is famous for her Friday bazaars, when people from all across the neighboring regions flock to this medieval town for supplies. Among the many wares on sale during this period, notable are plants and saplings, ready spiced Goan pork sausages, dried fish and prawns, clothing, junk jewelry, and of course, Feni, the well-loved and famous country liquor of Goa. For tourists coming here for the first time, a bit of bargaining is a must and easily done. Part of the charm of Goa, the Friday bazaars at Mapusa are a definite must visit.

The charms of Mapusa are not just limited to the fame of its bazaar. The region is home to an 800 year old temple known as the Bodgeshwar Temple which is dedicated to God Kanakeshwar Baba. The temple is one of the most respected shrines of the region and sees large crowds of devotees arriving to its premises each year with pots and oil lamps as offerings to offer to the Gods.
