Places to Visit in Goa

The appeal that Goa has is to a large extent similar to everything that is associated with the province, exotic and yet refreshing. Whether it is her whitewashed churches or her quaint fishing villages, Goa has a bit of everything for everyone. Among her many appeals are small, picturesque towns which constitute the major portions of the places to visit in Goa. These include:

  • Dona Paula

One of Goa's best loved spots, Dona Paula was named after Dona Paula de Menzes, daughter of a viceroy of colonial India. Madly in love with a Goanese fisherman Gaspar Dias, Dona threw herself from the cliff when refused permission to marry her lover. Today a throbbing city, Dona Paula symbolizes the essence of Goa, with her unceasing supply of sun, sea, fun and frolic. Located around 7 kms away from Goa's capital city of Panjim, Dona Paula has symbolized to most of the Goanese a story of love that had ended in tears.

  • Mapusa

Though a small town, Mapusa is the market hub of Goa, supplying the nearby regions with articles of daily need. The main market which is actually held on Fridays is definitely worth a visit. The place also falls on the route to the beaches like Anjuna and Chapora as well as the 800 year old Kansarpal-Kalbadevi temple which is only around 14 kms away from Mapusa.

  • Margao

One of the best preserved examples of the Portuguese culture that can still be seen in the nooks and corners of Goa, the tiny town of Margao is the capital of the Salcete province of Goa, in the southern part of the state. One of Goa's busiest towns, Malgao is generally seen to be the cultural capital of Goa.

  • Vasco Da Gama

At a distance of around 29 km southwest of Panjim, Goa's capital is the city of Vasco da Gama, perhaps Goa's most cosmopolitan city. Strategically placed on the western tip of the Marmagoa Peninsula, this is among the busiest ports of the western coast of India.
