In an attempt to restore, preserve and also help the performing arts in Goa to thrive, the Government of Goa set up a self-governing organization in Goa called the Kala Academy of Goa in the year 1970, which is proliferating even today.
Music in Goa
Goa, being ruled by the Portuguese till 1961, had heavy influence of European music which formed the Western classical kind of music the region is so famous for. The traditional Goan music forms are religious music, theatrical music , art music, dance music, wedding songs , etc. But Goa is renowned for its folk music mando or manddo, a kind of dance music that evolved out of wedding music, specifically the Ovi, which uses chorus . Goan songs are mainly sung in the Konkani language.
Some of the best vocalists of Hindustani classical music like the well-known Surashri Kesarbai Kerkar , the Nightingale of India - Lata Mangeshkar , her sister Asha Bhosle, are all from Goa. There are also pop stars like Remo Fernandes who have popularized Western music in the area.
Lately, there has been an upsurge of electronic music in Goa, especially a style called Goa trance . In the late 1960s, when hippies from world over thronged to Goa in hordes, this kind of music started to develop and gradually became very fashionable. Early pioneers of this genre include Mark Allen, Goa Gil and Fred Disko .
