About Goa

Goa is famous for its historic churches, temples, traditional homes, colorful festivals, lush green countryside, rich flora and fauna, fabulous cuisine, and exotic beaches. The magical land of Goa is decked with popular tourist destinations like Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Tambdi Surla, the Calangute Beach, the Baga Beach , etc. The Forts in Goa, as well, are a big crowd puller among the tourists from world over.

Forts in Goa

The imposing forts in Goa are remnants of the enormous castles that once guarded the territory newly invaded by the Portuguese from land and sea conquests. These forts are advantageously located and well-barracked to protect the entrance to the port or to the provinces nearby. At present, most of these forts have become dilapidated, except for a few that have been transformed into a prison or a hotel. Yet, the laterite walls of these historic forts, though covered with lichens, carry the legacy of Goa's architecture. The Terekhol (Tiracol) Fort in the northern most corner of Goa is one of them .

Terekhol (Tiracol) Fort

Overlooking the beautiful Keri beach , on the coast of the Arabian Sea , the 16th century Terekhol (Tiracol) Fort is an architectural spectacle. This fort, situated on the north side of the banks of the Terekhol River , was built by the Maharaja of Sawanwadi. But it was invaded by the Portuguese, who rebuilt it again in 1764 AD for the defense of Goa. Later, in 1961, the fort was used as a base for freedom fighters during the liberation of Goa. Presently, this fort has been converted into a heritage hotel providing picturesque views of enchanting turrets and the vast sea.

Located 42 km from Panaji in the northern most corner of Goa, the fort has in its courtyard the century old Church of St. Anthony. The church, opened only on special occasions, has a classical late Goan portico .
