Shigmotsav or Shigmo
Holi in Goa is celebrated as Shigmotsav or Shigmo , a festival of farewell to winter and welcome to spring celebrated with color, songs and dances to the beat of drums on the full-moon day in the month of Phalguna (March). It is a social festival with a religious core.
On this occasion, a Puja is performed of the stems of the teflam fruits or betel nut, which is struck on the ground before the temple. It is followed by burning a little grass placed at their feet. In the spirit of plenty that marks the harvesting season when the barns are full, the occasion is made memorable with a number of wonderful dances.
Shigmo commences with Naman or collective obeisance of villagers from 9th moon day to full-moon day. From the 11th moon day to the 15th moon day , various village groups dressed in colorful attires set out with the festive mood. The main function of the day is marked by the profuse use of Gulal (red-powder), which people throw on each other as a sign of full-hearted greeting.
