Feast of St. Francis Xavier
Introduction
The Feast of St. Francis Xavier takes place every year on 3rd December, to commemorate the death of St. Francis Xavier, the patron saint of Goa. Thousands of devotees from all over the country and abroad, gather in Old Goa to attend the feast of “Goencho Saib” meaning The Lord of Goa to honor his contribution to Christianity and the Jesuit Community. The festival is best known for the ritual kissing of the Saint’s relic.
Background
Born to aristocratic parents in Spain, Saint Francis, along with Saint Ignatius of Loyola and five others, founded the Society of Jesus on August 15, 1534. St. Francis, widely known for his missionary work abroad landed in Goa on 6th May 1542. He carried on the work of conversion in India, Malacca, Ceylon, Japan, China (Hong Kong). He died before reaching mainland China on December 2nd, 1552 at the age of 46. The remains of his mortal frame was shipped to Goa in 1553, December 11 and kept at the Basilica of Bom Jesus where it now stays. That the body of the saint has remained incorrupt till date, have encouraged much debate and is considered to be a reflection of his power and miracle by the devout.
Activities
The pilgrims begin to gather at the Basilica of Bom Jesus as early as 4:00 a.m. and attend the High Mass around mid-morning. Many of them reach the Church in walking pilgrimage from Ambelim in Assolna in Salcette. After the Feast they move to out to visit the Old Goa fair, the largest in Old Goa. This colorful fair is famous for its Chonnem(Grams), Khajem(Goan Sweet), Chourico-pao(Goan sausage and Bread) and Sorpotel. Later the pilgrims line up to kiss the relics of the saint.
Specialty
The pilgrims line up in a very long queue to kiss the relics of the saint for good luck and happiness. This ritual goes on for several days even after the feast.
